Sun Diego
Following two days of pissing rain, the warm weather finally took hold in San Diego. My dad and I took advantage by traveling to an abandoned highway half way to Los Angeles, and went for a long bike ride amongst the hilly backdrop of southern California. Yesterday, we embarked on a tour of a decommisioned aircraft carrier that served the U.S. navy from 1944-1992. As much as the idea of mass warfare (and the U.S in general, for that matter) disgusts me, it was nonetheless a pretty remarkable experience. The behemoth is a fucking city, once replete with a crew of 4500, 2 barber shops, 2 movie theaters, and it's own postal code. As for the next few days, it looks like pa & I may head south of the boarder for a couple of days, or alternatively, do some hiking in Joshua Tree national park. Sleepless
Insomnia strikes again...learning to embrace the sleepless night is something I've grown quite used to. As 2006 moves forward, life seems to be getting better and better. No startling self-revelations, no particular moments of ecstasy or anything of the like, but just being happy with my my situation and excited about prospects for the future. Speaking of the future, I just picked up my ticket to Bonnarroo 2006...in my opinion, what may be the best concert festival line-up in history, all in the bowels of rural Tennessee in the dead heat of summer. www.bonnarroo.com for all the details. Old ghosts
So this getting old thing is kinda haunting. 24 is no joke...in a feeble attempt to reclaim my youthful exuberance, I spent last night catching up with some friends from my UofT days, and the experience made me feel even worse about the situation. Life marches on however, and so far, 2006 has been off to an auspicious start. I've spent a good chunk of time reclaiming some friendships I've let slip by the wayside in one form or another, and it looks like some romance may be brewing after an over-extended hiatus. My band is back in the studio recording our second E.P. this month, and school starts full-time come march. Time to scour my paltry fridge contents... Start Spreading the News
This LJ post comes to you direct from NYC's lower east village. My friend Dan and I made the drive from T.O. to Jersey in a whirlwind 7.5 hours, thanks (or no thanks) to Dan's 150 kph formula one style bout mid-trip. We spent the first 2 nights at a friends place in Jersey, and made our way into Manhattan on the night of the 30'th, relocating to another friends place in the village. We took in 2 amazing concerts at the Hammerstein Ballroom on the 30'th and new years eve, namely, The Disco Biscuits and The Disco Biscuits. I started casually getting into the group a couple of months ago, thanks in whole to my lead singer and travel companion for the trip. These shows were off the hook...live electronica (drums, bass, guitar, keys) at it's best. Although the music was hampered a bit by the bands terrible singing, the focus was on the soaring, often 20-minute plus tension-and-release style jams, and the incredible improv chops of all 4 members. I wrapped up new years morn back at the village appartment with some friends, absolutely fried from 4 hours of unabated dancing and drug consumption. Tomorrow we boot it from Jersey to Montreal for 2 nights, playing a show at McGill's open air pub, and back to Toronto to continue the party for another 5 days, then finally some R&R. Onwards.... Home for a rest
So I returned from a 2-day outing to my bandmates cottage yesterday on Lake Simcoe. The time we spent there was devoted exclusively to playing music and doing drugs (of the softer sort)....I came home thoroughly hazed and exhausted. Never have I had such a musically intense experience in my life, save playing Tommy in high school pit band (filling John Entwistle's shoes is no easy task). I spent the better part of today making lists...I've reached the point where there's so much trivial shit I've been putting off doing for months, I've decided to strategicaly 'burst the bubble', and do it ALL this week. Anyone remember the cool Montreal band Bran Van 3000? I got my hands on their 1998 studio release 'Glee' (it's no longer available for commercial purchase), and it's a winner. Let me know if you're interested, and I'll burn you a copy. Current Mood: calm | | Saturday, November 26th, 2005 | | 9:35 am |
Morning Glory
Woke up at 8:30 on this saturday morning only to see a thick blanket of snow layering the city. Unfortunately, it's only beautiful if you're on the inside. Life has been treating me pretty well. I've been pretty disenchanted with the neuroscience program at UofT, and I've been calling into question whether spending my days in a research lab is in the cards for me. I'll probably take next semester off and try and gain some perspective by stepping away from things for a while. Here's the abridged version of recent happenings in my life: > ran into Eugene Levy at a Toronto cafe last week > picked up a bunch of new wall hangings and tapestries for studio 506 (A.K.A. my apartment) > jamming almost every night with different musical friends (this seems to have taken over as my prime social vehicle) > compulsively re-organizing and cleaning my pad > picked up a music industry course at Harris Institute for the Arts > joined a climbing gym On with the show... C'est L'Alloween!
Holy shit, it's been this long since my last update? Well, I persevered through a weekend of some seriously down & dirty haunted partying....20 shots of wiskey on friday; hands down the most I've even consumed in an evening in my life. And no vomit! Boy am I talented. The Show finished up 2'nd in Healey's battle of the bands, and part of our prize includes opening for Jeff Healey sometime over the next few weeks...not too shabby. I've been in the process of picking up some new gear over the past few weeks, including pro tools, the software-hardware dynamic recording duo. I Can't wait! Crunch Time
Well, the shit is starting to hit the fan (as per usual at this time of year), meaning, it's time to hit the books it a serious way for the next three days. October 10'th? Impossible....It's not like I've been going on extended procrastination bouts when I could have been diligently studying the inner workings of the brain (I suppose that's what I've been doing in a sense anyways). Well, this will be an ugly week, no doubt. On a brighter note, my new apartment is begining to feel like home, and all that is left to do is to decorate the generous wall space that still remains bare. A-bode well...#%&???
So 206 St. George St (A.K.A. my new apt.) is open for business. Stop by to take in the blissful aroma of lead paint, the unparalleled beauty of bare walls...the list goes on. I've spent the past week christening my new place, cleaning, taking endless piles of trash out to the dump, and destroying my body at the gym with my fitness confidant. Yesterday must have been the clincher for the ultimate in hedonist activity: My friend Peter and I (in celebration of his #22) plucked, barbequed, and proceeded to eat an entire duck fresh from his farm; lock, stock, and barrel. Life can be too sweet sometimes. Current Mood: drained | | Monday, September 26th, 2005 | | 8:32 pm |
Sailor's Delight
Today was one of those knife-through-butter days. 9 hours of absolute uninterupted sleep, 1 hour of class, 2 hours of gym time, 1 hour of sushi, 5 hours T.B.D, and 8 hours of positive head space. My close friend Josh was in town from Montreal for the weekend, so friday and sunday nights we're spent getting very intimate and interactive with our good old friend, Big Blue. Moving time is less than 3 days away, and I've spent too many hours combing through the house scouring for all of my personal belongings...the house (A.K.A. 22 Dunloe) is being put on the market for sale, so the home-excavation has begun. We'll see what goodies the basement churns up. Current Mood: pleased | | Friday, September 23rd, 2005 | | 3:52 am |
Igniting the Midnight Petroleum
Approaching the 4:00 A.M. mark, and still not through with the bottomless pile of shit I have to get through before tomorrow. Next on my list is an album review for U of T's paper: the disc is so cliche and boring, I'm having trouble writing anythg about it at all. Tonight aside, the past few days have been pretty swell...my good friend Peter is back in T.O. from the bush in northern B.C, and we've begun our fitness extravaganza for the year. My band finished our studio demo we've been working on, and the final product turned out as well as we could have expected, considering we had 10 hours to record, mix, and master 5 tracks. On a less exciting note, my car broke down a few days ago outside my friend's apartment at midnight. The fucking CAA finally showed up at 1:30 A.M, much to my dismay. So much for my trip to Montreal this weekend. Current Mood: tired | | Sunday, September 18th, 2005 | | 12:30 pm |
Inebriation
So I actually managed to roll out of bed at a reasonable hour this morning. In light of last night's debauchery, I figured I'd be too sick to get up before rehearsal at 8:00 tonight. Most of the evening was spent at an friends bachelor party. The night began with a long game of fruitless poker, 2 bottles of wine, 4 joints, 3 B.T's, and good company. We managed to make our way to 'For Your Eyes Only', where we took in some surprisingly fleshy sites. I was under the impression that only a certain amount of bodily information could be divulged at those type of venues, but the girls literally left nothing for the asking. I began to make the trek home on foot from King & Bathurst to my dad's place at St. Clare & Spadina, making a pit stop along the way when I bumped into some friends in the Annex. I vaguely recall stopping half way up the Casa Loma stairs, thinking to myself that it might be a wise idea to pass out there for a while until I mustered up enough energy to complete the journey. I resisted, and with some difficulty, made it home in one piece. Current Mood: tinnitus | | Thursday, September 15th, 2005 | | 11:13 am |
Number One
So for the second time in two years, I lost my old-fashioned pen & paper journal on a road trip, giving me more reason to hop on the blog bandwagon. It's been a pretty hectic few weeks: road gigs and studio recordings with my band (www.welcometotheshow.ca), neurosciencing at UofT, and squeezing out the last of my summer partying inclinations. new apartment in 2 weeks! The decoration theme: classy psychedelia....you'll have to wait and see for yourself. Current Mood: content |
